E Boat Lambay Race 2006
The HYC Lambay Race had all it’s usual ups and downs and provided the venue for a most exciting and exhausting few hours sailing.
The E Boats had 9 boats entered this year, but unfortunately, due to weather conditions, we could only produce 5 boats at the start.
Wyle E Coyote had a flyer of a start from the pin end and put a lot of distance between her and OctopussE, the second boat.
The wind was strong and the boats were well spread on the leg to the Island. Wyle E raised their spinnaker but found the angle tight.
Escapade took a wide approach, flew their spinnaker and made up a lot of ground, going from 4th to 1st at the Island.
Rounding the Island, OctopussE took the inside track and Escapade took the outside track and it seemed that it was anybody’s race until approaching Tailor’s Rock, the wind blew fiercely and many boats suffered knockdowns.
Escapade came out on top and rounded Tailor’s Rock in first place with a lot of water between her and OctopussE in second.
In quite strong winds, Escapade soon found she was overpowered, and OctopussE gained steadily and overtook easily using the advantage of 4 crew on the rail to keep the boat driving hard.
Escapade did several sail changes but still found she was losing ground to the rest of the boats and went from second to forth when Eraser overtook and then Eagre.
It was then a battle to the line, with four boats battling hard for places.
The final result was, OctopussE first, Eraser second, Escapade third, Wyle E fourth and Eagre fifth.
The final four boats finishing within a minute after four hours racing.
Everybody felt the aches and pains from a hard race well contested.
Congratulations to the winning boat “OctopussE” and her skipper Pat O’Neill and Crew.
