Irish E Boat Class Association National Championships 2004

Report - Brian Hogan

The first Irish E Boat Class Association National Championships took place on 9th - 11th July 2004 at Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club in ideal conditions for both competitors and race organisers alike.

Six races in total were scheduled, two on Friday evening, three on Saturday and two on Sunday. Ian Sargent, PRO for the event, wisely postponed the Friday evening racing due to lack of wind until the following day.

Saturday saw three windward / leeward races and one triangular course run back to back in moderate conditions in Dublin Bay.

There was very close racing throughout the entire fleet but at the front things were tight. The three main contenders were OctopussE, Escapade and Easy Rider. The racing amongst the entire fleet was extremely close and exciting.

Ian Sargent set a further windward/leeward race on the Sunday morning and then a long race around the complete Bay.

Pat O’Neill on OctopussE emerged as our new National Champion with Pat Gilmour in Escapade second and Kieran O’Gorman in Easy Rider third.

All crews retired to the yacht club for the prize giving ceremony which was followed by an informal barbeque held in the clubhouse and this was welcomed by the extremely tired and hungry crews.

May I take this opportunity to thank all who helped make the event a resounding success.
